Last week found us at Blip Festival 2008, the megalocus of live chiptunes music, where Game Boys met Atari STs with Amiga visuals for four evenings of square wave fun.

We were out in Gowanus in Brooklyn at the event, at least until Rob and I got tired and had to go home and rest our widdle heads. But until then, we got to speak to several of the artists just after their sets, and the BBtv crew is taking our drunken, blurry footage and actually making something worth watching out of it.

Recollections of Blip Festival From a One Dauragon C. Mikado: Part 1

Now that I am basically a full week removed from the 4 day insanity that was blipfest, I feel like I can finally gather my memories enough to write them all down here. HERE GOES

(note I will try to add peoples internet names as to make the first day portion, where I mostly meet shit loads of people, less confusing)

Day 1:

I wake up hella early like a child on christmas day. My enormous bag is still rather not packed fully so I immediately get to work. I finish packing, freshen up, leave all the nessisary info with my homstead, kiss my kittens goodbye and head out the door.

Fast forward roughly 5 hours later and I am walking into the Bell House, bags and all. I am immediately greeted by Ricardo (dapantz) who is preparing the merch table for the first day crazyness. I make my way into the actual stage area where Graffiti Monsters are there sound checking and I am greeted by tons of familiar faces. I say all my hellos to Don (NOCARRIER), Will (Vblank), Paris (Paris), Jeff (Notendo), Joey (animalstyle) small paul, tall Paul and Asif (2 Player Productions) and then I kindly toss my huge ass suitcase into the visualist booth for safe keeping. I go on to meet a few people in person for the first time. Alex (IAYD) Luke (L-Tron), Nigel (Saskrotch), Zabutom and a few others. Me and L-Tron shoot the shit for a little bit before the Bell House people kick out basically anyone who doesnt have a performers pass, so we all move out to the hall where we continue to idle around and wait for the show to begin. I talk some more, meet more internet people, shake more hands and in general do a whole lot of talking about the forums. I move over by the 8bc merch table that I am gonna be helpin out with and I say my hellos to fellow forum Nazi Logan (Low-Gain). Jean (J.Y.K), who was kind enough to let me stay at her place during blip, heads over to the table and tells Logan where he can hang his bitchin 8bc banner. Around that time a cab carrying Kevin (esc, another fellow forum Nazi), Jake (Jellica), Chaz ( JPTR) and James (CDK) pulls up. The wave of hellos continue untill the 8bc table is mostly set up and everyone starts getting thier festival passes. Me, Jake, Chas, James and Tobias (Nordloef) decide to run and grab a bite before the show starts. We duck into a small grocery/diner and get sandwiches, which take FOREVER but are rather tasty. We walk back to the venue and I am half hugged half assaulted almost immediately by a very small and very british KezzieBeat(real name witheld to protect the innocent, namely myself). I begin to feel slightly overwhelmed by the sheer amount of internet that I am currently surrounded by. I meet tons of others people, Cassia (Ophycore), Chris (dot.fortune), Tim (Trash80, forum Nazi extrodinare), Jared (Sievert) Justin (Amiga Agia) ect. Then, THE SHOW BEGINS!

Notendo is a good start off for the festival. Nothing too complicated or crazy. I like his set a whole bunch.

Graffiti Monsters somehow end up being exponentially better every single time that I see them, and this is no exception. Double The Drummers = Double The Awesome

IAYD = Gawd DAYUM!!! Young Alex fucking MURDERS blipfestival, and is only the third act. He plays nothing but facecrushingly intense tracks (some from Dirty Electricity, some I hadn’t heard before) which causes everyone to flail and dance and go crazy and starts the first official moshpit of blipfestival 2008. I hear complaints of fatigue and aching legs for the rest of the night from performers and patrons alike.

Zabutom plays a solid enjoyable set and busts out some awesome keyboard solos whilst being extremely tall and swedish and drunk.

Tonylight I dont get to see because I am helping out at the 8bc merch table with Logan and Kevin. I like what I hear from the table though,

M-.-n ‘s set is super fun. I only catch the latter half because of the merch table but I really enjoy what I see and hear.

Sidabitball’s set is high energy and SUPER freaking hilarious due to his self made visuals, and an awesome C&C music factory cover.

Unicorn Dream Attack plays and extremely fitting final set that is super dreamy and sweet, featuring a few of his Love Bits tracks. And his Terminator shades are totally bitchin.

After the music is done and people clear out, I go grab my coat and bag before I am summoned towards the bar by a more than slightly inebriated PDF_Format. I sit there for a while talking to him about stuff and things untill Jean comes around and asks me if im ready to head out. I tell her im ready when she is, so we roll out (literally, my bag was quite huge) and I bid my fare thee wells to everyone untill the next day. Jean and I spend most of a nice little cab ride talking about how rediculusly crazy super awesome IAYD was before we arrive at her place.

And then,

Sleep.
